Rain Boy (2)

Okay, so I posted this on another thread, but I think the thread died, so yeah....
Here it is:

Ok, so I've been thinking about this idea for a while, and was sort of tossing it back and forth. I talked to Niems about it today, so I decided to post on it.

It seems like Rainboy has a creative side that we haven't seen yet. It seems to me that he could have musical talent, and that would be kind of cool. If he played something (not extraordinarily unique-maybe a guitar or something) I think he would keep it kind of personal or something-which would kind of link him to Poet's poetry issues. He would probably have some talent lying there (at least something portable- that's more rainboy's style) so I was thinking harmonica at first, but I think that's too simple for rainboy. Something quiet. I don't know. This is where I get lost. What do you guys think?

Thinking again, I don't really think it needs to be musical. I was listening to music when I thought of this idea, so maybe that was it. I just would like to see some sort of artistic talent or creativity in Rainboy somewhere, because he's definitely the kind of person that would have it.

I dunno, i actually see him as more of a cimputer nerd than a musician.

I agree with Kristin. I mean, if both Rainboy and poet are these unseen, "starving artsits," the play could quickly turn into something sappy and Hollywoodish. I think that they would be more real if they DIDN'T have any extraordinary talents, but instead were just teenagers and are able to accept that.

Not to say that Rainboy should be dumb or anything. But I think he is the way he is because he has resigned himself to being ordinary.

Kristin, you see everyone as a coffee house philosopher. You know it's true. I agree with Marnie too. I think that it could get sappy if it were like that. Looking back on my own comment I fear that putting something like computer nerd or musician would change the character alot and I like him the way he is.

I don't know. I don't think I really phrased this right. I didn't mean to say that I thought he should have this extraordinary gift that only he knows about or something, but rather just something that he just did for fun- for an outlet. I also didn't mean like a starving artist kind of deal, but again, just something that he does. I also don't really see him as a computer nerd because it seems like he tries to get away from all of that stuff rather than get into it, nor a coffee house philosopher- it's too... un-Rainboy-ish. I really don't like labeling him, that's why I wanted him to have an outside interest besides sitting in the rain- nobody can do that all the time- it's too two-dimensional. I thought having a creative talent for Rainboy would help him define him better and make him more realistic. He seems to be coming off lately with something perceived as depression by those around him. I read that (and I've seen this- everybody has) people who are more pensive and "thinky" and what lots of people confuse (or see realistically) as depressed are normally more on the creative side of the scale and build an art form with themselves. I thought of the different kinds of art that he does, but acting and majorly performing arts seem too "public" for him, so I think that a visual or musical art would be something that he would be into- something he could do on his own time for himself and himself only. And not to be some sort of "Come on, Rainboy, you can break out of your shell if you just learn to share your gifts!" stupid, cliche, inspirational thing, but just something artistic that helps define him more than a depressed, over-analyzing person who sits in the rain.

Personally, I like him just sitting in the rain. I don't think it's two dimensional at all. To me, sitting in the rain to think is a very unique thing to do. I'm not saying it's a bad idea, I just think that adding something like a special talent or hobby would drastically change the character. He's just a goofy little kid with some issues and I like him the way he is.

wow. before I scrolled down to elizabeth's comment I was going to say something to the exact same effect. way to go elizabeth. and I agree with danny too, because sitting in the rain is enough to endear you to someone, outlet or no outlet. Cheers!
